Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxford

The splendid 18th century baroque architecture of Blenheim Palace and the stunning Capability Brown landscaped parkland makes Blenheim Palace a popular place for tourists to visit.

Queen Anne gave John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough the ruined Woodstock Manor together with the sum of £240,000 in honour of his victories in the Battle of Blenheim. Blenheim Palace was built with this money designed by Sir John Vanbrugh between 1705 and 1733 in an impressive, exuberant and luxurious style that derives in late 16th century Italy – the baroque style. Blenheim Palace is the only non-royal, non-episcopal country house in England to be given the title of Palace.

Sir Winston Churchill was born at Blenheim Palace on 30th November 1874 and later married at Blenheim Palace he stated in one of his speeches that “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us…” – the speech was in 1943 and was regarding plans to rebuild the Chamber that had been shattered by bombs during World War II.

The Grade I listed building Blenheim Palace today is family home to the Duke of Marlborough, open to the public and often used by film companies as its impressive architecture and stunning landscaped gardens provides a striking setting.

Broughton Castle, Broughton, Banbury, Oxfordshire

South-west of Banbury on the B4035 in north Oxfordshire you will find the magnificent moated Broughton Castle built by Sir John de Broughton around 1300. Broughton Castle has an eventful history with the house falling into a dilapidated condition in the early 19th century due to the owner William Thomas, 15th Lord Saye & Sele no longer living in Broughton favouring Belvedere at Erith, Kent and neglecting Broughton Castle. Later in the 1860s with the help of architect George Gilbert Scott, Frederick, 16th Lord Saye & Sele saved Broughton Castle carrying out vital repair work although his successor John Fiennes preferred racehorses rather than spending money on Broughton Castle.

In the 19th and 20th century firstly the Gordon-Lennox family then the Fiennes invested in improvements then later help was received from the Historic Buildings Council in 1956 and in the 1980s and early 1990s English Heritage.

Broughton Castle is open to the public from at Easter and from May to September where visitors can admire the house and gardens including the Ladies Garden, which was created by Lady Algernon Gordon-Lennox in the 1890s with its delightful buxus hedge features and flower borders.

Chastleton House, Morton-in-Marsh, Oxfordshire

Chastleton House is a magnificent example of Jacobean architecture and home to the Jones family since 1610 although latterly owned and run by the National Trust since 1991. Local Cotswold stone was used to build the house within Chastleton village making it different from other large mansion houses built in parkland with long approaches. The impressive county manor house has sixteenth century Flemish tapestries and 17th century flamestitch hangings adorning the walls in the bedrooms. Chastleton House has a magnificent Long Gallery with the longest barrel-vaulted ceiling in England and is known as the home of croquet as in 1865 the rules of croquet were first classified at Chastleton.
