Information on Ely
Just 14 miles from Cambridge is the cathedral city of Ely. With its tall towers the cathedral can be seen for miles across the fenlands. Ely is the third smallest city in England.
Ely was named as a City of Virtue in the 1974 Royal Charter.
Ely has many historic buildings and an appealing shopping area, which twice weekly on Thursdays and Saturdays holds a popular general market.
The Great Ouse River runs through the city. The Cambridge boating team practice on the Great Ouse for the annual Oxford/Cambridge Boat Race and in fact the boat race was actually held here in 1944, the only time it was not held on River Thames in London.

Here you can walk along trails for miles and see many species of birds, animals, insects, flowers etc and admire some of the delightful windmills speckled around the landscape. After a long walk you can relax in the coffee shop and visitor centre.
